multiplexer consists of two inputs D0 and D1, one select input S and one output Y. Depending on the select signal, the output is connected to either of the inputs. Since there are two input signals, only two ways are possible to connect the inputs to the outputs, so one select is needed to do these operations.

The only inverting path in a multiplexer is from select to output. ... To implement NOT gate with the help of a mux, we just need to enable this inverting path. This will happen if we connect D0 to '1' and D1 to '0'.
