Proper operation of an oscillator requires its loop gain to be slightly above 1 (A\u03b2 > 1) for low-amplitude signals, to ensure the start of oscillations. When the signal reaches too high an amplitude, the amplifier gain \u201cA\u201d must decrease in order to obtain a loop gain below 1 (A\u03b2 < 1).
